In this stage, we depart from the Plaza Mayor and head towards the heart of the province of Zamora, following the famous Vía de la Plata.
Stage of the Camino de Santiago: From Plaza Mayor to El Cubo de la Tierra del Vino
Start of the Route: Plaza Mayor and Aldeaseca de Armuña
We begin our day at Plaza Mayor, continuing along Zamora street until we reach the vicinity of the bullring. Here, we follow the N-630 road towards Zamora and find Aldeaseca de Armuña. From there, we take a forest path that will lead us to Castellanos de Villiquera, crossing a rural landscape characteristic of this stage of the Camino.
Calzada de Valdunciel: Heritage and Culture
The next stop is Calzada de Valdunciel, a small town notable for its 12th-century church, partially rebuilt in the 16th century. Inside, there is an image of Santiago Peregrino, an important reference for pilgrims traveling this route to Compostela. After leaving Calzada de Valdunciel behind, we continue towards El Cubo de la Tierra del Vino, passing near the Topas prison.

El Cubo de la Tierra del Vino is the first town encountered in the province of Zamora when following the Camino de Santiago. Located at an altitude of 840 meters, this municipality has nearly 500 inhabitants and is known for its winemaking past. Although the phylloxera plague of the 19th century destroyed most of the vineyards, several traditional wineries remain, reminding pilgrims of the area's former winemaking splendor. Furthermore, El Cubo is situated on what was once a Roman Mansio, known as Sibariam.
History and Origin of the Name
The name of the town, "El Cubo," may derive from the existence of a defensive tower or cube that protected this strategic area, which was an important transit point during the Roman and medieval periods.

Church of Santo Domingo de Guzmán
