Start of the Camino: From Praza do Obradoiro
The stage of the Camino de Santiago begins at the Praza do Obradoiro, one of the most iconic places in Santiago de Compostela. From here, the pilgrim descends along the Rúa do Campo das Hortas, exiting through a staircase located to the right of the Hostal dos Reis Católicos. We continue along the Rúa Galeras to reach Rúa de San Lourenzo, which leads us to the beautiful oak forest that bears its name.
First Indicator of the Camino: The Yellow Shell
In the oak forest, the pilgrim finds the first indicator of the Camino: the yellow shell, the traditional symbol of the Camino de Santiago. This symbol assures us that we are following the correct route to Santiago de Compostela.
Leaving the City: The Rural Camino
As we leave the city, we cross the Sarela River and enter the rural world. The place of Sarela de Abaixo is the last spot where we can see the towers of the Catedral de Santiago. From here, the Camino leads us through typical Galician rural areas like Moas de Abaixo, Carballal, Quintáns, Ventosa, Lombao, and Augapesada, with a highlight being the recently restored medieval bridge in Augapesada.
Rural Landscapes and Ethnographic Heritage
Throughout this stage, pilgrims will enjoy the popular architecture of rural Galicia, with numerous horreos, cruceiros, and traditional constructions reflecting the deep agricultural culture of the region.
Ascent to Castiñeiro do Lobo
The route begins a steep ascent towards Castiñeiro do Lobo, a significant landmark in this stage. From here, the route takes us through the villages of Susavila do Carballo, Trasmonte, Reino, and Burgueiros, where the authentic Galician essence can be felt.
Ponte Maceira: A Place of Historical Interest
One of the highlights of this stage is Ponte Maceira, a charming village that is home to a Gothic bridge with three arches, built in the 14th century. This bridge is surrounded by a small historic center full of charm. Additionally, the Capela de San Brais, a neo-Gothic pazo, and the Muíños do Tambre are other treasures found in this beautiful place.
Continuing the Camino Towards Negreira
After crossing the Tambre River and passing through the village of Barca, we leave behind the road leading to Negreira. The path continues uphill towards Chancela de Abaixo, where we can admire the Pazo de Chancela, an elegant noble construction. From here, the route gently descends towards the town of Negreira.
Negreira: History and Culture
In Negreira, pilgrims can enjoy its architectural heritage, highlighted by the Pazo de Cotón and the Romanesque churches of San Pedro de Gonte and San Esteban de Landeira. This town is an excellent place to rest and explore before continuing the journey to Santiago de Compostela.
