Camino de Santiago: Stage from Padrón to Santiago de Compostela
The stage between Padrón and Santiago de Compostela is one of the most anticipated by pilgrims, as it marks the proximity to the final destination: the Catedral de Santiago. Along this route, walkers enjoy a journey filled with history, breathtaking landscapes, and key monuments, reflecting the rich Jacobean tradition. Below, we detail this historic route.
From Padrón to the Collegiate Church of Iria Flavia
We leave Padrón through rúa Bordel, where we soon find the ancient Collegiate Church of Iria Flavia, a place of great historical significance. It was here that the bishop Teodomiro set out in search of the lights that, according to legend, shone on Mount Libredón, a key event in the creation of Compostela. Next to the church, we find the cemetery of Adina, immortalized by Rosalía de Castro, with graves dating back to ancient times. We can also see the bust of Camilo José Cela in a nearby small grove, with his tomb in the cemetery.
Through Villages and the Medieval Camino
We continue our journey through Iria, passing by its old houses and the former train station, until we reach the N-550. Don't worry, we soon divert towards Romarís, a section of the medieval camino. This part takes us through villages with a distinctly traditional flavor, such as Rúa, Rueiro, Cambelas, and Anteportas, which maintain the sacred spirit of the route in Galicia.
Esclavitude and the Sanctuary
Further on, we head towards Esclavitude, a sacred place that houses a miraculous fountain and the splendid Santuario da Esclavitude, a Baroque monument from the 17th-18th centuries. A little further, we find an old inn, now functioning as a tavern. After walking a few more meters, we reach the church of Santa María de Cruces, another emblematic spot on the Camino de Santiago.
Angueira de Suso and the Pazo de O Faramello
After crossing the railway line, we descend towards Angueira de Suso, a charming village, and further on, we arrive at Areal. We continue along a dirt road to the N-550, but soon divert towards Teo, passing by the Pazo de O Faramello, a historic site where a paper mill was established in 1710. In Teo, we find one of the most beautiful crosses in Galicia, and visit Castro Lupario, a legendary spot in Jacobean lore where Queen Lupa attended to the disciples of the Apostle.
Towards Santiago: The End of the Camino
The road continues towards A Grela, where the route becomes more complicated due to the construction of modern chalets. However, the proximity to Santiago becomes evident, with the abundance of single-family homes. We pass by Milladoiro and finally reach Agro dos Monteiros, a point of great significance for pilgrims, where the descent towards the city begins. This is the Monte do Gozo of the Portuguese Camino, the final stretch before reaching the goal.
Entering Santiago de Compostela
After a joyful descent, we pass through Santomil and Amanecida, arriving at the Hospital Clínico and the Choupana area. Finally, we enter Santiago de Compostela, passing through rúa Rosalía de Castro to reach the Alameda. From there, we head to Porta Faxeira, one of the old gates of the city, and continue along rúa dos Francos until we reach the Catedral de Santiago, our final destination.
