Camino de Santiago: Stages from Pontevedra to Caldas de Reis
On this stage of the Camino de Santiago, pilgrims experience a route full of history, nature, and architecture, passing through beautiful landscapes and iconic towns of the Portuguese Camino. Below, we detail the route so you can enjoy this part of your pilgrimage to the fullest.
Departure from Pontevedra: Virgen del Camino and the Puente del Burgo
The day begins in Pontevedra, leaving the albergue and walking along Virgen del Camino Street. We make our way to the Sanctuary of the Virgen del Camino, located in the Plaza de la Peregrina, one of the city's most iconic spots. From here, we continue along Rúa Soportales and Rúa Real, reaching the Puente del Burgo, situated at the northern exit of the city.
Crossing the Cabras River and Reaching the Church of Santa María de Alba
After crossing the bridge, we walk about 200 meters to Rúa da Santiña, continuing parallel to the train tracks, passing by the old ‘Cros’ factory. We cross under the railway line and, after a gentle climb, reach the Church of Santa María de Alba, with an impressive image of the Apostle in its adjoining cemetery. This is a historic point where, according to legend, Archbishop Xelmírez rested on his return journey to Compostela after the famous "pious theft" of the relics from Braga.
The Pozo Negro and the Village of San Mauro
About 500 meters further, we reach the Chapel of San Caetano, and then pass through the villages of Liborei and Castrado, venturing into a beautiful forest. Along the way, we encounter the Pozo Negro, a site of interest located by the stream of the same name. From here, we begin a gentle climb towards the railway line, and after crossing it, we arrive at Lombo da Maceira and the village of San Mauro. This was an ancient point for changing mounts, where adjustments were made to the animals before continuing the journey.
The Valbón Bridge and the Crucero de Amonisa
We walk along a solitary road until we reach San Mamed de Portela, where we find an old cross marking the correct direction. A few kilometers ahead, one of the most remarkable landmarks of the Portuguese Camino awaits us: the Valbón Bridge and the Crucero de Amonisa. At this point, the Apostle Santiago, sculpted in the cross, points us towards the north, guiding us to Compostela.
The Church of San Martín de Agudelo and the Chapel of Santa Lucía
After about 60 kilometers, we will observe the Romanesque Church of San Martín de Agudelo. The path continues zigzagging through areas affected by invasions suffered by small landowners. In the following kilometer, we reach the Chapel of Santa Lucía, which takes us off the road and leads us along paths surrounded by meadows and vineyards. Here, the Camino offers us a breather and takes us directly to Tibo, a place with a good fountain and a cross marking the exit of the village.
The Thermal Spring and Santa Mariña de Caldas de Reis
As we approach Caldas de Reis, we reach Santa Mariña de Caldas, with its impressive Romanesque portal. After crossing the bridge over the Umia River, we enter the town's old quarter, where we will find a thermal spring. This spring, famous for its sculpted lions that spout hot water, is perfect for giving our feet the rest and healing they need after a day of walking.
Conclusion
The stage between Pontevedra and Caldas de Reis is one of the most charming on the Camino de Santiago, filled with history, nature, and architecture. Along this route, pilgrims will enjoy stunning landscapes and pass through places of great historical significance, such as the Valbón Bridge or the Church of Santa María de Alba. Additionally, the rest at the thermal springs in Caldas de Reis will be the perfect reward after a day's walk. Keep going on your way to Compostela!
