Stage 3 of the Camino de Santiago: From Azambuja to Santarém
In this third stage of the Camino de Santiago, we leave Azambuja and begin our journey along Rua Vítor Cordão, passing through the town square and Rua Conselheiro de Arauca, until we reach the N-3, near the train station. This stage takes us on a varied route that mixes dirt paths, paved roads, and historical landscapes.
From Azambuja to Quinta do Alqueidão
From Azambuja, we follow a paved road towards Vala da Azambuja. After crossing the ditch bridge, we take a dirt path that still preserves fragments of the ancient Roman road, as Azambuja was known in antiquity as Oleastrum. This route leads us to Quinta das Quebradas and, later, to the Campo de Aviação da Azambuja.
Throughout the journey, the path winds and brings us to a junction that connects with a paved section. From there, we turn right to reach Quinta do Alqueidão.
Crossing Reguengo and Valada
We continue towards the Tagus dike, which we leave to our right as we head towards Reguengo. After crossing this small town, we continue along the road that leads us to Valada, passing by Quinta da Mota Frade.
In Valada, we walk along Rua 1º de Maio, Largo Aves Redol, and Largo da Igreja, where we can admire the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da O, built in 1528. From here, we continue along the dike until we reach Porto Mugue.
Continuing Along the Dike: Porto Mugue to Santarém
Our journey continues along the dike, crossing Quintas do Pedroso, das Varandas, do Malpique, and da Caneira. After passing the last of these estates, we take a left turn, where the dirt path leads us between vineyards. We reach a paved road, cross under the Salgueiro Maia Bridge, and head towards the Aeródromo de Santarém.
Santarém: A Historical Destination
Once we pass the aerodrome, we continue along the paved road, cross the railway line, and ascend to Santarém via Calçada da Junqueira, passing the old Fonte de Cãos. Upon reaching this historic city, we encounter its castle, walls, and a rich heritage of churches, all witnesses to its journey through the centuries.
With this stage of the Camino de Santiago, we have reached one of the most significant towns in Portugal, full of history and tradition.
