Stage of the Camino de Santiago: Lisbon to Alhandra

Start of the Camino: Lisbon Cathedral
The  Camino de Santiago begins at the majestic  Lisbon Cathedral (Sé de Lisboa), the starting point of this first stage of the  Portuguese route. From here, the pilgrim begins their journey, delving into the picturesque  Alfama district, one of the oldest in the city. The first streets to traverse are  Rua Cruzes da Sé and  São João da Praça, which will guide the pilgrim through a maze of alleys to  Largo de Chafariz de Dentro.

Through the heart of Lisbon
After leaving the cathedral, the route continues along  Rua dos Remédios and  Rua do Paraíso, reaching  Campo de Santa Clara. Continuing along  Rua do Mirante, the route crosses  Rua Diogo Couto and heads down  Rua Cruzes de Santa Apolónia. From there, we continue along  Calçada da Cruz da Pedra, then head towards  Rua Madre de Deus, where the old Manueline convent can be admired, now converted into the  Tile Museum.

Leaving Lisbon and heading towards Santarém
The pilgrim continues their  route through  Rua do Grilo,  Rua do Beato and  Rua do Açúcar, until reaching  Avenida Infante Don Enrique, where they will enter  Parque das Nações. This is a resting point and a change of landscape, as the journey now follows  Rua Gaivotas do Tejo towards  Avenida Fernando Pessoa, one of the main arteries of the park. At this point, the  Camino do Tejo begins, heading towards  Santarém, a place of great significance on the  Camino de Santiago in Portugal.

Heading towards Sacavém and beyond
The path continues north, crossing  Passeio das Táguides until reaching the famous  Vasco da Gama Tower. From there, the pilgrim continues along  Passeio do Tejo and  Passeio do Sapal, heading towards the  mouth of the Trancão river. As we progress, the  Camino de Santiago enters more rural areas, passing through  Passeio do Trancão and reaching  Sacavém, a locality where the old N-10 bridge is crossed.

On the way to Póvoa de Santa Iria
Next, the path leads pilgrims through the  EPAL Canal, crossing various points of interest along the route, such as  Rua Infante D. Pedro in  Alverca, and passing through industrial and rural areas until reaching  Alhandra. This final section of the  stage is along  N-10, and it is advisable to be cautious when walking near the roadway due to traffic.

End of the stage: Alhandra
Finally, pilgrims arrive in  Alhandra, where the route enters the town, crossing the train station and walking through its streets to reach  Praça 14 de Maio. From here, the journey continues along  Rua Duque de Terceira to  Oliveira Martins Square, where this stage of the Camino de Santiago concludes.
