Stage of the Camino de Santiago: From Zarautz to Deba

Start of the Route: Ascent towards Getaria
The stage begins by leaving the historic center of Zarautz behind, and after walking about 100 meters towards Alto de Meaga, we take a right turn onto the Aldapeta slope, an ancient road that connected Zarautz with Getaria. We ascend along this path, passing the Vista Alegre neighborhood on the left and the Santa Bárbara chapel on the right. After a brief section of concrete, we find the old road again, continuing until we catch sight of the coastal town of Getaria. We proceed along an asphalted path surrounded by chacolí vineyards, until we reach the GI-3391 road, where we begin to descend. After passing by the cemetery, we leave the road at a sharp bend and descend along the Lormendi slope, leading us in front of Getaria's town hall.

Path to the Askizu Neighborhood and Farmhouses
From Getaria, we ascend along Herrerieta Street and continue along the Askizu road until reaching the Gaintza and Agerregitxiki farmhouses. To the right of the latter, we resume the path, which connects to the GI-3392 road. We continue until we reach the Azti farmhouse, where we take the detour that leads directly to the Askizu neighborhood.

Towards Zumaia: Descent and Landscapes
From the San Martín chapel, we follow the path that leads us to the Arano farmhouse. At a fork in the road, we take the right path and, after passing through a stile, begin descending towards Zumaia, which unfolds before us. During the descent, we pass a eucalyptus plantation on the left and enjoy exceptional views of the Orroaga bay. After crossing the N-634 road, we follow a promenade that leads us to the Zuloaga Museum and the Santiago chapel. We continue until we reach a pedestrian bridge over the Urola River, then descend to the Gernika promenade and cross another pedestrian bridge over the Narrondo stream to enter the urban center of Zumaia.

Ascent towards the Elorriaga Neighborhood and the Itziar Pass
Leaving Zumaia, we ascend along Sorazu and Arritokieta streets until we reach the chapel of the same name and the cemetery. From there, an asphalted road allows us to gain altitude while enjoying panoramic views of Zumaia and its coastline. We pass several farmhouses before following an ascending path that takes us to the recreational area of Elorriaga, where we continue towards the neighborhood of the same name. Later, we descend towards the N-634 road, cross the road, and continue along a paved path that leads to the farmhouses of the Mardari neighborhood.

From Itziar to Deba: Path and Final Descent
From the Itziar neighborhood, we follow the paved path along the cemetery and begin a steep descent towards Deba. After leaving the San Roque chapel to the left, we take the old road that leads us directly to the historic center of Deba.

Discovering Deba: History and Heritage
Deba has an important historical heritage, with archaeological sites in the Ekain, Urtiaga, and Ermittia caves, which contain highly valuable rock paintings. The Santa María la Real church, built between the 15th and 17th centuries, is one of the town's main architectural gems, with a splendid 15th-century polychrome portal. In the historic center, the Town Hall from the 18th century and the Agirre Palace, built in the 18th century on a medieval foundation, also stand out. Additionally, the Sasiola convent and its 18th-century church remain as remnants of the pilgrims' history in the area.
