Stage of the Camino de Santiago: From Hondarribia to Zarautz
Start of the Route from Hondarribia
The stage begins at the Hondarribia Town Hall, from where the journey begins along the Paseo de la Concha. At the end of the Ondarreta gardens, the path diverges towards the road that ascends to Igeldo. After walking about 100 meters, we take a right turn to ascend the Marbil path, reaching the Erregenea residential area, which is left behind after climbing a staircase.
Ascent and Route Towards Igeldo
The path continues towards a trail that enters a natural arch of vegetation, leading to an intersection with the road leading to the Berakotegi hamlet. From there, we continue along the path until we reach a road intersection, where we take the route that leads us to the Buenavista restaurant. From here, the path connects to the Marabieta trail, taking us to the intersection that leads to Igeldo.
Path to Orio: Trails and Rural Landscapes
Leaving behind the urban area of Igeldo, we continue along rural paths parallel to the coastline, passing by the hamlets of Iranguen and Egiluze. After passing the Lusarbe hamlets in the municipality of Orio, we descend towards the paved road. At this point, the path turns right onto an ancient sandstone-paved road that leads us to the Aganduru hamlet. From there, we head towards the road that leads to the beach of Orio, passing by the San Martín chapel before starting the descent into the historic center of Orio.
Crossing the Estuary and Arrival in Zarautz
After crossing the bridge over the Orio estuary, we continue along the path that follows the coastline and leads us to the beach of Oribarzar. Then, we take a trail that passes under the A-8 highway, approaching the Txurruka albergue. From there, we head towards the paved road that leads us to Zarautz, offering an excellent view of the coastal town.
Exploring Zarautz: History and Monuments
Upon arriving in Zarautz, we enter through Nafarroa Street, passing by the San Pelaio chapel, a 16th-century building. The route takes us through the Mollarri pedestrian street until we reach the historic center of the town. Zarautz, with its history dating back to the 13th century, is famous for its connection to whaling, a tradition that is still reflected in its coat of arms. During the stage, pilgrims have the opportunity to visit some of the town's most iconic monuments, such as the Santa María la Real parish church, which houses a baroque altarpiece and remains of an archaeological site.
Notable Places in Zarautz
Other points of interest include the Palace of the Narros, in Renaissance style, and the Zarautz Tower, a 14th-century medieval building that now houses the town's Historical Museum. Additionally, the Santa Bárbara chapel, located in the rural neighborhood of the same name, also stands out for its historical value.
End of the Stage
The stage ends in the historic center of Zarautz, after traveling through beautiful coastal and rural landscapes, enjoying the rich history and monuments of the town. This section of the Camino de Santiago is perfect for pilgrims looking for a combination of nature, history, and culture.
