Distance30 Km.

Stage of the Camino de Santiago: From Villafranca del Bierzo to O Cebreiro

This stage of the Camino de Santiago is one of the most well-known and demanding sections of the route, offering two alternative paths towards the summit of O Cebreiro. Along the way, pilgrims enjoy stunning views of the Valcarce Valley and a rich diversity of nature.

Option 1: Camino through the Valcarce Valley

The first section of this Camino de Santiago route takes pilgrims from Villafranca del Bierzo to Trabadelo along the N-VI road. This option follows the old Camino route, winding through the Valcarce River valley. However, walking along the shoulder of this road can be uncomfortable and dangerous due to traffic, so many pilgrims opt for the alternative route.

Option 2: Alternative Route through Cerro del Real

For those seeking a more natural and challenging experience, the second option is to ascend through Cerro del Real. This alternative route is more strenuous, but offers a unique panoramic view of the Valcarce Valley and Monte Teleno. The climb from the Barrio de Tejedores through heathers, pines, and chestnut trees is steep, but is rewarded with breathtaking views.

Once on Cerro Real, the path continues through chestnut groves, and after losing the trail in some sections, it reaches an asphalted track that descends into Trabadelo.

From Trabadelo to Portela and Beyond

From Trabadelo, the Camino continues along the local tracks of the old N-VI road, crossing several small villages, such as Ambasmestas, Vega de Valcarce, and Ruitelán. Each of these has its own charm, with the Hospital Inglés district in Herrerías being particularly notable.

Ascent to La Faba and O Cebreiro

The journey continues with a steep ascent that takes the pilgrim from Valcarce to La Faba, a small village in the area. From here, the path climbs through slopes of heather for over 2 km, until reaching Laguna de Castilla, the last village in León.

Just 1 km from here, you reach the border between León and Galicia, with the milestone marking the 152 remaining km to Santiago de Compostela. With one last effort, you reach the summit of O Cebreiro, an iconic place for pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago.

Tips and Map of the Route

When consulting the Camino de Santiago map, it is important to consider the different alternatives to choose the route that best suits your physical level and preferences. The stage between Villafranca del Bierzo and O Cebreiro is challenging, but offers one of the most rewarding experiences of the journey.
