Stage of the Camino de Santiago: From Carrión to Calzadilla de la Cueza

Start of the Stage: Leaving Carrión de los Condes

The stage begins in Carrión de los Condes, one of the most iconic towns on the French Camino, from where pilgrims take the N-120 road. They cross the river and leave the Monastery of San Zoilo to their left, a place of great historical and spiritual value on the journey towards Compostela.

The Carretera del Indiano: Paved Road to Benevívere

A few metres from the junction with the C-615, which leads to Riaño, pilgrims take a paved road known as the Carretera del Indiano. This stretch, about 4 kilometres long, leads to the ruins of the famous Abbey of Benevívere, one of the most interesting historical points of the stage. Although the ruins are off the path, their contemplation invites a brief pause to admire this important relic from the past.

The Cobbled Path: Following the Old Roman Road

Shortly after the ruins of Benevívere, the path takes a sharp turn, but pilgrims continue straight along a cobbled path that was once part of the old Roman road. This route leads to Calzadilla de la Cueza, the next destination on the stage, located about 13 kilometres from Carrión.

Points of Interest Along the Route: Fuente del Hospitalejo and Crossroads

Along this stretch, pilgrims can enjoy several points of interest. To the right, shaded by poplars, is the Fuente del Hospitalejo, a good spot to rest and rehydrate. A little further on, the road to Bustillo del Páramo is crossed, and pilgrims pass three important crossroads: Pozoamargo, Ríoseco, and Valdemienzo. After these, the tower of the church in Calzadilla de la Cueza comes into view, marking the approach to the village.

Arrival in Calzadilla de la Cueza and Continuation of the Path

Once in Calzadilla de la Cueza, pilgrims continue along the N-120 road towards Ledigos, where the Camino de Santiago route continues on towards Santiago de Compostela.

Stage Summary

This stage of the Camino de Santiago is a peaceful journey along roads and rural paths, with a mix of paved and cobbled surfaces, connecting several historical points like the Abbey of Benevívere. The day offers moments of reflection as pilgrims walk for kilometres surrounded by the calm and beauty of Tierra de Campos, before reaching the welcoming village of Calzadilla de la Cueza. Without a doubt, a stage that offers a unique experience of the Jacobean Route.
