Stage of the Camino de Santiago: From Frómista to Carrión de los Condes

Leaving Frómista and the First Kilometres

As soon as pilgrims leave Frómista, the Camino de Santiago enters the C-980 road, a straight route connecting Frómista with Carrión de los Condes. After about 3 km, Población de Campos is reached on the right. Before entering the village, it is possible to take a small detour to visit the Chapel of San Miguel, located in a meadow under the shade of a poplar grove.

Crossing Población de Campos

From the chapel, pilgrims cross the road and enter Población de Campos. The Camino follows the pilgrim’s path, known as the Calle Francesa, right through the centre of the village. On the left is the Chapel of Socorro, a picturesque and significant place for pilgrims.

Options when Leaving Población de Campos

When leaving the village, pilgrims have two options:

- Cross the Ucieza River and follow the road towards Revenga de Campos and Villarmentero de Campos.

- Take a wide cobbled track that runs parallel to the Ucieza River on its right bank. This route leads to Villovieco, where the Ucieza River is crossed, and pilgrims continue on the left bank until they reach Villarmentero de Campos, where the two variants join.

Continuing Towards Villalcázar de Sirga

From Villarmentero de Campos, pilgrims again have two alternatives:

Option 1: Continue along the C-980 for about 7 km to reach Villalcázar de Sirga.

Option 2: Return to the Ucieza River and follow its left bank. This path crosses a typical riverside forest of Tierra de Campos, with willows, poplars, and aspens, until reaching the Chapel of Virgen del Río. From there, pilgrims take the Arconada road to the left to enter Villalcázar de Sirga.

Last Kilometres to Carrión de los Condes

From Villalcázar de Sirga to Carrión de los Condes, there are about 5 km left. The most direct route follows the C-980, which is left on the left just upon entering Carrión. At the entrance of the town, the route passes by the Convento de las Clarisas and crosses the town centre, passing by the churches of Santa María and Santiago, emblematic points of the Jacobean route.

Conclusion: A Varied and Picturesque Route

This stage of the Camino de Santiago offers a variety of options and landscapes. From passing through small villages and chapels to the peaceful paths alongside the Ucieza River, pilgrims will enjoy a tranquil route full of charm. Upon reaching Carrión de los Condes, one of the most important points on the French Camino is reached, with its rich history and Jacobean heritage.
