Literature and Books about the Camino de Santiago
The Camino de Santiago has inspired many to write about their experiences as pilgrims, how the journey impacted them, captured their hearts, and filled them with unforgettable moments. There is a wide range of recommended books, from self-help guides, comics, recipe books featuring the best dishes of Galician cuisine, to best sellers that have helped make the Jacobean Route more internationally known. Many novelists have found their calling in the Camino de Santiago, as was the case with the writer Paulo Coelho. If you are thinking of embarking on an adventure full of unforgettable experiences, we recommend reading some works to gain a broader perspective.
Here is a list of books to get you started:
The Pilgrimage (O Diário de Um Mago)
The Pilgrimage (O Diário de Um Mago) is one of the most famous novels about the Camino de Santiago.
This is the first novel by Paulo Coelho, in which he narrates his adventures as a pilgrim accompanied by his spiritual guide, an enigmatic companion named Petrus. The story describes extraordinary, mystical, and supernatural events that help him reconnect with himself and even confront his inner demons. A parable about the need to find our path in life, give it real meaning, and improve as individuals.
Following the publication of The Pilgrimage, many Brazilians were inspired by Coelho’s words and began their own Camino journeys.
The Way to Santiago
The Way to Santiago by Kim Hyo Sun. She has written three books, one for each of the Caminos she has walked: the French Way, the Portuguese Way, and the Silver Route. Thanks to these books, many Koreans have been encouraged to undertake these routes.
For this writer, the beauty of the landscapes has been a major draw, but for her, the best part of her experiences was meeting many people from different cultures. On her first Camino, she met 35 people from different nationalities, a highly enriching experience.
I'm Off Then
I'm Off Then by Hape Kerkeling. An extraordinary book filled with humor, insight, and wisdom. A testimony about the search for oneself and the priceless value of a journey on foot. In this book, we follow his personal struggle against physical limitations, the difficulties of the path, and his moral, spiritual, and personal growth—all narrated with humor, a hallmark of this German comedian.
The Magic Guide to the Camino de Santiago
The Magic Guide to the Camino de Santiago by Francisco Contreras Gil. This journalist and pilgrim, always with his backpack on his shoulders, is a man of soul and vocation. In his guide, he explores the search for the magical and the sacred along the Camino de Santiago. It includes basic information to start your journey and provides tips and places to make the experience a unique human and spiritual adventure.
The Path Within & After the Camino
The Path Within & After the Camino by Karin Kiser. This writer fell in love with the Camino de Santiago after reading Paulo Coelho’s book. She embarked on her first adventure in 2011 and hasn’t stopped exploring the routes since.
These are two pocket guides. The first, “The Path Within,” offers a simple approach to freeing ourselves from thoughts that limit our inner growth and happiness. The second, “After the Camino,” provides tips on how to incorporate the experiences of the Camino into everyday life.
Highly recommended and easy to read.
