Itinerary: Portuguese Way by the Coast
Itinerary: Portuguese Way by the Coast from Porto
The stages of the Portuguese Way by the Coast, as the name suggests, take place almost entirely along the coast, although there are also stages through mountains and by ferry.
It starts in the Portuguese city of Porto, passes through several Portuguese cities until reaching the Miño River, which awaits pilgrims coming from Portugal at the entrance to Galicia. For centuries, the main option was to detour inland towards Tui, but by following the coastal route, once in Galicia, it can be done differently: from the town of Caminha, take the ferry to A Guarda.
Recognized in 2009 as an official Jacobean route by the Xunta de Galicia, this itinerary covers 280 kilometers from Porto to Santiago de Compostela.
Of all the Camino de Santiago routes that run along the coast, this Portuguese variant is the one with the most stages close to the sea, without leaving aside the mountain and green landscapes. A magical blend of both sea and mountains.
The history of this route is as old as that of the classic Portuguese Way. It begins in the early 9th century with the discovery of the tomb of the Apostle Saint James, which generated, not only from Portugal but also from all over Europe, a wave of pilgrimages, thus establishing the various routes of the Camino de Santiago or Jacobean Route.
The Portuguese Way by the Coast can be a great alternative for pilgrims who want a different itinerary with impressive coastal landscapes, without abandoning the mountains and greenery that are a classic feature of the Camino de Santiago and Galicia.
We invite you to experience this wonderful journey!
